Having a deadline helps
If you are any type of creative: writer, artist, business owner, student, or do any work for yourself, then you need to set deadlines for yourself.
Having a deadline will help in the following ways:
- It will save you time. If a project is openended (like most self creative projects are) you will take longer in finishing the last 10-20% of a project which is usually the hardest to do. Starting a lot of projects is easy, but finishing is hard.
- It will better your focus. If you are working on multiple projects, having deadlines for each will allow you to focus on one project at a time instead of bouncing back and forth between them.
- You will have a better ability to maximize your schedule and performance. Without deadlines, you will have a tendency to take on too many jobs, or sometimes too few because you have inaccurately planned your calendar.
- This will provide structure to your work life. Most creatives and self-employed people shudder at the thought of working for the man, that’s why they do what they do. They love the freedom to pursue their work in their own way. But, our greatest strengths and be our greatest weaknesses. Setting deadlines for projects will help you be a great self-employed employee. In the structure of a “working for the man” job, there are deadlines for a reason–productivity, revenue, etc. Adding deadlines will help you with that structure.
What open-ended project are you working on that needs a deadline?

deadlines definitely help me. even self-inflicted “fake” deadlines. except sometimes that works like setting a clock ten minutes fast…
