Get there faster in 2010
Some of the best leaders I’ve ever been around all have one thing in common. It’s not charisma, or communication skills or creativity. Its goals and planning. These leaders had plans and goals for their future, both personally and corporate. The reason this is so important is that they recognize that if you do not have a plan to get where you want to be, then you’ll never make it. The end of December is perfect to set aside some time to dream and plan for where you want to be next year. Here are some ideas to consider when making goals and the type of goals you should consider.
- A goal must be specific. The more detail you can provide, the better your chance of success.
- A goal must be measurable. You need to be able to check your progress in the process.
- A goal must be realistic. Setting the bar too high is a sure recipe for quitting.
- Every goal you set, you need to write down.
Which goal is a good goal, and why?
Goal 1: To go on vacation this year
Goal 2: To lose 17 pounds and weigh 181 lbs by July 2010.
Goal 1 is not specific. Where do you want to go on vacation? How long will you be gone? Who’s going with you? Do you have enough money to go where you want to go? Is Europe too expensive for your budget? Would Florida been a better reality?
Types of goals:
Physical: How much do you want to weigh by a certain date? What healthy foods are you going to eat more of? What unhealthy habit are you going to stop and by what date? How often are you going to exercise?
Spiritual: How are you going to study the Bible this year? Are you going to start a new small group? Are you going to go on a mission trip? Where? When? For how long? Are you going to set aside days to fast, to meditate?
Academic: How many books are you going to read this year? Where do you want to grow in knowledge? Are you going to take any classes? Are you going to any conferences? Which ones? Are you going to join a leadership development program?
Relational: What relationships deserve the most attention this next year? Are you going to have a date night with your spouse? Are you going to take a marriage retreat? Are you going to have specific dates when you talk, with not TV, internet or cell phone?
Having specific goals will help you get to where you want to go faster. No one builds a house without a plan. Don’t try and build your life without a plan.
What are your goals for 2010? Post them and let’s hold each other accountable.

Great reminder and blueprint for success to think about over the holidays. One more I would add would be to write every goal down.
That’s a great point. Not sure why I didn’t add that. That’s the most important part! I’ll have to add it! Thanks for the input!
