If only I was in charge…
Have you ever said to yourself, “If I ran this company then ___________”? or “If I was the pastor of this church then I would _________”? If ONLY I were in charge….
If you would say yes, then I’ve got some great news for you. You’re not the only one who thinks they could do a better job if they were only given the opportunity. There are a group of leaders in the waiting that are licking their chops to get in on the action.
This past weekend I was at Six Flags in Atlanta with my wife. We had a great time, especially given the fact that the park was not too crowded. But I kept finding myself saying, If I ran this park…. I’d do this, I’d change that, I’d make this employee do that, etc. etc. etc. There is so much potential and if the owners of Six Flags would like to discuss a consulting opportunity, I’m pretty sure I could make you millions of extra dollars a year.
Here are a 6 thoughts if you have the curse of this thinking:
- Take notes now. Begin to catalog what you see in other businesses, churches, organizations and when your turn comes, don’t make the same mistakes.
- Make sure that whatever you are currently doing is the best it can be. Don’t be the guy pointing out the toothpick in the other guy’s eye when you have the 2X4 in your eye….
- Remember when you are in charge one day that there is someone thinking “If I ran this thing, I would ______” Seek out people and see what you are missing. A lot of times its the fresh young eyes that can bring the best change.
- Know when to speak up and when to shut up. I learned the hard way that eventually my “good ideas” would be better at my job or in my own company one day.
- Remember that sometimes that “idea” that you think is stupid was once someone’s good idea.
- Dear Six Flags, I can’t stop thinking about how I could help you so much by changing just a few things. We can work out a deal!
What are some things that you would change if you were in charge (assuming your boss doesn’t read this blog!)
