Why does Backstage Leadership work?

Uncategorized Oct 30, 2009 No Comments

BackstageTM

A lot of people ask about Backstage Leadership and how and why it works.

The short answer: Learning from those that have already walked the road your on is one of the best ways to learn.

The long answer: Backstage Leadership sessions are unplugged, raw, intense Q&A sessions with amazing leaders. Each session’s content is driven by the participant. The speakers answer their questions, not their own. Each participant is free to learn exactly what they need to at exactly the time they need to. Think of it this way, with every sermon or leadership talk you listen to it is broken up into certain sections. You have the introduction, a story, the set up, the scripture, the 3-5 minute section of exactly what you need to know and then a closing. So the important part is around 10% of the content. Backstage sessions are an hour and a half of those 3-5 minute sections. Its all take away material. It is very intense learning.

You get to learn from amazing leaders like Brad Lomenick and Dan Cathy. Tons of others too!

Do Something

Life Oct 29, 2009 No Comments

On the Backstage Leadership session last week with Andy Andrews, he made a great point. He said that when motivated people don’t know which way to go, a lot of times, they will sit and wait and wait and wait some more. He said to be successful, when faced with the opportunity to Do Nothing or Do Something, we must choose Do something every time. For opportunities come with those that are out there doing something; they rarely come to those sitting on the couch.

If you don’t know what to do right now, try reading a new book. Join a leadership development program. Go to a networking meeting. Call an old friend for lunch. Go volunteer at a food bank. Spend some time with the youth group.

Figure out something to do today and DO IT. For opportunities will come along when you are doing!

If you could do anything…

Life Oct 28, 2009 2 Comments

what would you do?

If you could do anything for a career, what would you do?

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

If you could accomplish one huge thing, what would it be?

What is stopping you? I bet it’s fear. Fear you’ll be rejected. Fear of money. Fear of what “they’ll” say. Fear you’ll fail. Fear you’re not good enough. There are so many things to be fearful of that you’ll always have an excuse. Time to quit with the excuses and get after it.

Pick a goal and go after it! Nothing is holding you back but a little bit of perspective.

If only I was in charge…

Have you ever said to yourself, “If I ran this company then ___________”?  or “If I was the pastor of this church then I would _________”? If ONLY I were in charge….

If you would say yes, then I’ve got some great news for  you. You’re not the only one who thinks they could do a better job if they were only given the opportunity. There are a group of leaders in the waiting that are licking their chops to get in on the action.

This past weekend I was at Six Flags in Atlanta with my wife. We had a great time, especially given the fact that the park was not too crowded. But I kept finding myself saying, If I ran this park…. I’d do this, I’d change that, I’d make this employee do that, etc. etc. etc. There is so much potential and if the owners of Six Flags would like to discuss a consulting opportunity, I’m pretty sure I could make you millions of extra dollars a year.

Here are a 6 thoughts if you have the curse of this thinking:

  1. Take notes now. Begin to catalog what you see in other businesses, churches, organizations and when your turn comes, don’t make the same mistakes.
  2. Make sure that whatever you are currently doing is the best it can be. Don’t be the guy pointing out the toothpick in the other guy’s eye when you have the 2X4 in your eye….

How do you boast?

Leadership, Life Oct 26, 2009 No Comments

In trying to remain open about my motives and the stuff that drives me, I came across a verse that is a clear warning to all young leaders. This is memory worthy.

“For everything in the world–the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does–comes not from the Father but the world.” 1 John 2:16

Wow. When I boast about what “I have done” then it actually is a slap in the face to God. Everything we have is from him. Every idea, dream, vision, ministry, church, investment, car, house, shirt, cell phone, book, and I could go on and on. It is all from the grace of God.

When ever we think “I did this!” or “I accomplished that!” we are wrong. To him be the glory, as its His anyways.

Anything you need to give credit for?
