Honest Scales-Social Justice is an old term

World Causes Dec 10, 2008 No Comments

The term “justice” or “social justice” has become quite the buzz word over the past few years.  There are shirts, hoodies, stickers, bags, hats and more. Caring about others has become cool. When the stars are doing it, the average man will follow at some point.

But why?  Why the sudden urge to help, to care, to give?  Why buy a more expensive product just because I know where its made?  Why?

The answer is simple.  God.  God, our heavenly father and Creator created us in his image.  And in that image comes his  commitment to justice. Listen to Proverbs 11:1, “The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight.” The Lord hates when people are treated injustly and delights when people are honest and fair.  Social justice is nothing new. Its been around since creation. It’s all through the Old and New Testaments. We see it in the life of Jesus and through modern saints like William Wilberforce and Chuck Colson.

So, the next time you see a “social justice” project or t-shirt or have it come up in conversation, you can input these two cents.

What do you want for Christmas?

I’m reading in Luke 18 this morning and a verse reached up and punched me in the throat. Starting in verse 7, “And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night?  Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly.”

Let me set this up briefly. Jesus just told a parable about a widow that begged an unjust judge who didnt care about God nor his fellow man. The widow went so many times to ask for his help in adminitering justice that he finally gave in to her.

That’s when Jesus tells those around him, listen, you have a just heavenly Father that will give you justice….but you need to be asking for it.  You need to be “crying out day and night.”  He won’t keep putting you off. He’ll answer you.

There are so many injustices right now in the world.  Slavery, murder, rape, poverty.  The list could go on for miles.  I think that we have a duty as Christians to be calling out to God on behalf of those suffering from these injustices.  And we need to be doing it day and night.  If we do, God will move on our behalf.  I’ll say it again as I’ve said so many times before, we have an amazing opportunity to stand up and be The Church right now. We can be the hands and feet of Jesus and deliver the life saving message of hope in Jesus to a hurting world. That is what I’m praying for this Christmas.  Will you join me?
