I am going old school for the next 21 days. I busted out a book I have not read since sophomore year at Clemson. John Maxwell’s simple, yet foundational book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.  I’m reviewing one law each day and looking at ways I can better myself and our ministry. I’ll catch you up on the first few days and lessons.

Law 1: The Law of the Lid.

Summary:

There are certain lids on everyone’s potential of leadership that must be removed if greater effectiveness is to be achieved.

Thoughts:

-Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness

-The greater the impact you want to make, the greater your influence needs to be

-Leadership has a multiplying effect. The greater the leadership, the greater the potential for impact

-To reach the highest level of effectiveness, you have to raise the lid(s)

Take-Aways:

What are my lids? 1. Organization: I need better personal and organizational systems and work flows (written down!), priority list (Druckard), and not-to-do list. 2. Focus/Distractions: Similar to above. I need priority list, written schedule’s and accountability to follow through. 3. Attitude and Emotions: I am growing in my ability to control how I react to situations. To help in this the needs are, prayer, memorizing scripture, and time off. 4. Experience/Knowledge: Hopefully I’ll never think “i’ve arrived” and will always have a hunger to learn. Raising this lid will require reading, studying, spending time with other leaders, prayer and time in the Word.

Law 2: The Law of the Influence.

Summary:

Leadership is influence–nothing more

Thoughts:

-Titles don’t have much value when it comes to leading

-Just because you started something, or have a lot of knowledge, or have a position, does not make  you the leader.

-Influence gives you leverage-which is leadership

-Volunteers can not be forced into anything, they have to be influenced. This is leadership in it purest.

Take-Aways:

How can I gain more influence?

-Believing more in people and their abilities

-Empowering them, giving them responsibility

-Living by example and having a moral authority

-Always be learning and growing

-Pull for Clemson

It has been a few weeks since an update. Time really does have a way of leaving us.  Let me give a few quick updates.  At our quarterly board meeting last weekend, we assessed the state of World Causes and talked about our plan for the next 6, 12, 18, and 24 months.  We are super excited about some stuff coming up.  Right now, we are trying to raise $100,000 by December.  This is a goal we are committed to and are praying about diligently.  We are looking for one time and monthly  supporters. If you want to help end the evils of poverty, injustice and epidemic disease, please help us by giving a tax deductible gift today.

A new front page is being developed for our World Causes site.  We are super excited about this.  It will enable us to tell our story in a better more compelling way.  This will be in the next few months.  I’ll keep you posted.

Catalyst 08 is coming up.  For any Free Chains supporters that will be at Catalyst in Atlanta, we will be taking our largest group photo ever with our orange Free Chains.  Time and location of picture to be determined.

College Football is here!  We leave tonight to head to the old stomping grouds to get ready for the big game tomorrow against Bama.  There are high expectations for Clemson this year. I hope we exceed every one.  Time will tell.

Been a good long week.  Had some good meetings where I was able to share our vision for World Causes.  Some were to individuals, some families and one was to a group of business people.  Our mission is to create 1st step solutions for people to take to help end poverty, injustice and epidemic diseases. The first step is the hardest, so we want to make it the simplest.  That’s what we’re working on.

This has been the most exciting Olympics I can remember.  Was anyone else yelling like crazy during the Michael Phelps relay?  Anyone want to go play beach volleyball now?  Anyone else been working out just a little harder this week?  I have yes’ to all three.

Lastly, I really like sting cheese. My wife bought some from the store the other day…and it is good. Thanks!

The car search is finally over. After looking on ebay, craigslist, autotrader, cars.com, a number of dealers, we drove our decision home today.  We had to deal with two online scams (great deal on a car + “i’m out of the country with unicef but the car is ready to ship” guy= scam!!), tons of car fax reports and driving to atlanta multiple times…but its over.

We’ve learned how much of a blessing having a car is, and how much of looking for one is a curse!

I had a great meeting today with someone I worked for when I was 15.  It was awesome and encouraging.  I was able to share our vision of World Causes and Free Chains.  The awesome part was, that by the end of the conversation, he was as excited about it as I was.  Very cool.

During the conversation, he mentioned a statement he uses for his business that I thought was worth sharing.

What you focus on will change

His example was: if we focus on better labor cost, labor costs change. And he had some other business examples.  It seems so simple, yet very powerful. It got me thinking about things that I am wanting to change and how my focus is. With out focusing, things will not change. Whether we’re talking about losing weight, quitting a bad habit, forming a good habit, spending more time with your family, spending more time with God, or a host of other things.

What are you wanting to change?  How are you focusing on that change?
